From the traditional round cut to the emerald cut, diamond shapes have been a popular choice in jewelry-making for centuries. However, nothing compares to the stunning beauty of the brilliant cut. With its many facets and unique design, this type of diamond can really unleash its brilliance and sparkle.

What is the brilliant cut?

And you thought the diamond was a precious stone? Well, the answer is "no". A brilliant is, in fact, a diamond with a special cut. It was 1919 when Marcel Tolkowsky, a mathematician and gemologist from Antwerp, member of a family of diamond cutters, dared to do something unprecedented and extraordinary for that time: making a round cut with 58 facets (or 57 if you exclude the ). The diamond is usually cut into two basic pyramids on which rest 33 cuts on the crown (the upper half, above the middle or girdle of the diamond) and 25 on the pavilion (the lower half, below the girdle), which has only the tip cut to form the bundle, around which 8 additional facets are sometimes added.

This was given the name of brilliant and, nowadays, it is known as the cut that exudes a special beauty, allowing for an amazing reflection and refraction of light. The effect is called "scintillation" (glow in colors) and jewelers call it "fire play".

The history of the brilliant cut - how it came about

Rather, the history of the brilliant is a fascinating journey through time, full of stories of art, innovation and pure beauty. The origins of the brilliant cut can be traced back to the 17th century, during the reign of Louis XIV in France.

At first, these special diamond cuts were simple, with only 17 facets, and were called "mazarins" (after Cardinal Jules Mazarin, who developed this complex shape and bequeathed a collection to Louis XIV of 18 diamonds). As diamond cutters perfected their skills, they realized that by adding more facets, they could enhance the diamond's brilliance. Thus, in the 1700s, Vincent Peruzzi, a Venetian cutter, added 16 more facets, creating a diamond with 33 facets.

The diamond's popularity reached new heights during the Victorian era, when it became a symbol of wealth and prosperity. Today, the brilliant cut remains one of the most sought after diamond shapes. Its timeless beauty and unmatched luster make it the preferred choice for engagement rings, earrings and other fine jewelry.

How is the quality of a diamond determined?

As mentioned above, of all the cuts of a diamond, the brilliant shines the most, facilitating the reflection of light in the best possible way. As with other diamonds, the quality of a diamond is determined by the 4Cs (cut, color, clarity and carat weight).

In 2005, the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) introduced a grading system for unaltered brilliant-cut diamonds. This name applies to that symmetrical round cut with a regular series of 58 facets, cut to modern standards. Therefore, the diamond is distinguished by some typical features: a girdle (the outer edge of the stone, which is the widest), the table (the octagonal-shaped upper part), 33 facets above the diamond girdle, 25 facets on the pavilion (below the girdle ) and culet (the extreme point at the bottom of the gemstone).

Why give diamond jewelry?

A diamond offers numerous advantages that make it a popular choice among jewelry lovers. One of these is its unparalleled brilliance. The unique arrangement of the facets allows it to reflect and refract light from various angles, creating a fascinating play of lights.

Another advantage is its versatility. The brilliant can be found in various sizes, making it suitable for a wide range of jewelry, from delicate earrings to spectacular engagement rings. In addition, the special cut enhances the overall appearance of the diamond, making it appear larger and more impressive than other shapes that have the same carat weight.

What does a diamond symbolize?

The diamond represents perfection and strength. This status was achieved due to one of its most important qualities: hardness. Moreover, the diamond is a symbol of luxury and sophistication, and if we talk about human traits, it reflects strength, perseverance, purity and beauty. The gift of diamond jewelry is the ultimate proof of love between two people and eternal commitment.

Timeless, simple, yet so elegant, diamond jewelry has the power to highlight any style and win hearts forever.
