There are several methods by which to recognize a diamond. Of course, bought from an authorized jeweler, it will come with a GIA certificate. At Valmand, all diamonds and precious stones are accompanied by certificates of authenticity.
How to recognize a diamond: the water test
To make sure the diamond is real, use this simple test. Fill a normal glass 3 quarters full with water. Let the stone fall into the water. If it sinks, it means that it is a real diamond. If it floats, then you are dealing with an imitation. A real diamond has a high density and therefore will sink when left in water.
How to recognize a diamond: the steam test
For the steam test, hold the diamond between two fingers and blow on it, steaming it. A thin layer of steam will form on top of it, as a result of the moisture and heat from your breath. If the steam disappears immediately, it means that the diamond is real. If it takes a few seconds for this to happen, you are dealing with a fake. Diamonds conduct heat and therefore the steam dissipates easily.
When you observe the "sparkle" of a diamond, you are actually experiencing its ability to refract light. When the light enters the pavilions, it is directed towards the top of the diamond, so that it appears as a glow to the naked eye. When this happens, and the diamond shines radiantly, it is called "brilliant". Non-diamond stones, such as cubic zirconia, will not refract light as well. They will have less shine or none at all.
To see if the diamond is real, place it on the surface of a newspaper. Make sure there is enough light and try to read through it. If you see the letters, then you are dealing with an imitation. If, instead, it scatters the light and shines, then it is a real diamond.
At Valmand we sell only real diamonds, accompanied by a GIA certificate . The precious stones bought from us benefit from increased attention when they are processed, because we know that in this field even the smallest detail can make the difference in what proves the quality.
